MBA 501: Management Essentials (O'Neil, Fall 2022): Four Functions of Management

Assignment

Article Analyses (2 required)

Students will demonstrate their mastery of the four functions of management by completing a series of article analyses in which they read the article, summarize it, create parenthetical citations (3 or more styles in each article), discuss implications and include a reference list at the end of the analysis essay (3-5 pages each, excluding title and references pages, APA Style).

What are parenthetical citations?

The most common form of in-text citation is known as a parenthetical. This means that the reference information is provided within parentheses at the end of the sentence.

Parenthetical citation structure:

(Author Last Name, Year Published)

Parenthetical citation APA example:

(University of Minnesota, 2015)

Example in use:

"Planning is the function of management that involves setting objectives and determining a course of action for achieving those objectives" (University of Minnesota, 2015).

Four Functions

What are the four functions of management, and why are they important?

What do managers do to help their team, and the organization?  Why is managing so important? When you are reading your textbook and other readings, think about it.

Difference between a summary and an Annotation for a bibliography

A summary is not the same as an annotation.

For a summary, you only need to briefly state in a few sentences what the article, book chapter, or other resource is about.
Annotations should be reviewed using critical thinking skills, analyzing the information to inform the audience about the information contained.
Annotations are not abstracts, and abstracts are not summaries, although an abstract is more closely related to a summary.
