POL 499: Senior Seminar in Political Science: FDR: Politics His Way
Elliot Rosen's "Hoover, Roosevelt, and the Brains Trust" focused on the transition from the Hoover administration to that of Roosevelt and the formulation of the early New Deal program. "Roosevelt, the Great Depression, and the Economics of Recovery "emphasized long-term and structural recovery programs as well as the 1937-38 recession. Rosen s final book "The Republican Party in the Age of Roosevelt, " situates distrust of the federal government and the consequent transformation of the party. Elliot Rosen holds that economic thought regarding appropriate functions of the federal government has not changed since the Great Depression. The political debate is still being waged between advocates for direct intervention at the federal level and those for the Hoover ethic with its stress on individual responsibility.
A ghost has inhabited the Oval Office since 1945 the ghost of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. FDR's formidable presence has cast a large shadow on the occupants of that office in the years since his death, and an appreciation of his continuing influence remains essential to understanding the contemporary presidency.
Perhaps not southerners in the usual sense, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Lyndon B. Johnson each demonstrated a political style and philosophy that helped them influence the South and unite the country in ways that few other presidents have. Combining vivid biography and political insight, William E. Leuchtenburg offers an engaging account of relations between these three presidents and the South while also tracing how the region came to embrace a national perspective without losing its distinctive sense of place.
