When Van Goigh died in 1890 at the age of 37, his work almost unknown to the wider world. He never had a solo exhibition during his lifetime. He only sold one paiting while he was alive, yet now his paintings sell for millions. He was to become probably the most sought- after and influential artist of the European avant-garde.
