Role 1: Nurse

For the Nurse Station Attendant

Information You Have:

  • Vital Signs Chart:
    • BP: 100/70 (slightly low)
    • HR: 102 (elevated)
    • RR: 20
    • Temp: 101.2°F
    • Mild dehydration signs
  • Intake History:
    • Last 24 hours of food consumption
    • Timing of symptom onset
    • Frequency of vomiting/diarrhea
    • No blood in stool
    • No respiratory symptoms

How to Act:

  • Professional but concerned
  • Note worsening dehydration
  • Track symptoms progression
  • Require the "Medical Detectives" to ask specific questions in order to get any information that is relevant
  • Emphasize time since symptom onset

Medical Detectives

For the Medical Detectives (teams of 2-5)

  • You Must determine:
    • What is the most likely diagnosis, based on symptoms and the patients medical information
    • You must ask specific questions that can lead to a diagnosis
      • What was the patient doing yesterday? Is it possible that ti could have been something from more than one day ago?
      • What did the patient eat in the last 24 hours?
      • Where did the patient go?
      • What activities was the patient involved in?
      • Did the patient encounter anyone who was ill, and who could have transmitted an illness in the last 2-3 days?
    • You have a limited time to determine what the diagnosis is (15-20 minutes)
      • Once you determine (correctly) the diagnosis, then you must also determine
        • What exactly caused the patient to fall ill
        • Was a pathogen or virus involved
        • What could have prevented it
        • What might be a good treatment plan
  • Three diagnosis attempts allowed
  • Need to justify treatment plan

Role 2: Patient

For the Patient (Alex)

Background for you to Remember:

  • You work at a local restaurant, and you are very busy between your college studies and your job. You eat out a lot.
  • Symptoms started early this morning.
  • Yesterday, you ate: Eggs benedict with hollandaise sauce and toast and hash browns for breakfast, McDonald's fast food for lunch, raw oysters, caesar salad, and chocolate ice cream for supper
  • First symptom was stomach cramps
  • Then nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Now you have a slight fever, can't keep anything down, not even much  water
  • You're dehydrated and weak

How to Act:

  • Hold your stomach frequently
  • try to look pale and sweaty
  • Make frequent trips to bathroom
  • Act weak and tired
  • Voice is weak and strained
  • Keep trying to drink water but struggle

Co-Worker (optional)

For the Co-worker at the restaurant (Jordan)

Information You Know:

  • Restaurant's name
  • Be able to recall a lot of the menu
  • Note that you were together a lot of that day
    • You were not together in the morning, and while you met up at McDonalds, you did not eat there.
  • Who else got sick? (2 other customers called to complain that next day about being unwell)
    • They all ate raw oysters
    • 1 of them also may have eaten ate at McDonalds
  • What has been in the news lately about McDonalds food poisoning?
  • Kitchen's food handling practices where you both work
  • Recent health inspection for the restaurant you work at (passed 2 weeks ago)
  • Storage temperatures for seafood

How to Act:

  • Show concern for Alex
  • Defensive about restaurant cleanliness
  • Mention other sick customers only if asked
  • Can describe food preparation methods
  • Getting nervous about own health
