Types of information

Primary Sources    Secondary Sources Tertiary Sources

Primary Sources are obtained from original sources, such as journal articles published by the researcher, or from their research notes/journals etc. (which are not usually available to the average researcher). For some disciplines such as history, diaries and notebooks; photographs, etc. are of great importance.

 

Compilations of data recorded in handbooks of various names and    for various purposes. Can usually  be found in the reference section of the library.

 

 Least specific with regard to date of    ..reported data, and is usually edited, ..rather than using a blind peer ..reviewed process.

 

Examples:

  • articles in journals published by scholarly press (i.e. Duke Press, University of Florida Press)

  • articles published by professional interest groups (i.e., PMLA  - Publications of the Modern Language Association) or the American Chemical Society)

  • Notes written by Ben Franklin available through the Library of Congress
