HUM 110CL Giants of the Arts - The Sixties

If you have found this LibGuides page you are probably an instructor who is teaching Giants of the Arts. The School of Arts and Sciences adopted a theme for the 2017-2018 academic year. That theme is "The Sixties." I piloted a 1960s version of Giants in a Summer II class. It was fun and exciting and we all learned a lot. For instance, when I began teaching the class I hadn't realized the sub-theme of appropriation and re-contextualization would appear with such regularity in each of the modules.  I also hadn't counted on how little my traditional age college students would know about Sixties music. I figured that they would not know much about Pop Art or the Cuban Missile Crisis, but I was floored when no one in the class had ever heard "Me and my Bobby McGee" or the Grateful Dead. Somehow I figured their musical knowledge would just be more extensive. It wasn't, but they all knew songs by Kanye West, Beyonce, and Eminem that prominently featured samples of Sixties songs. Those lessons where we connected the original song with the updated song and sample turned out to be really a lot of fun.

Anyway, I'm putting some of the PPTs I worked on in that class here. Feel free to peruse them or borrow them or transform them! I ended up not creating a PPT for the modules on Literature or Theatre or the final sections on Religion and Environment. If you have ideas or PPTs or assignment you'd like to suggest for this Sixties version of Giants, please let me know! I'd love to build this as a collaborative open resource from which we can all benefit.

As many of you know, I got remarried in 2016 and changed my name. My apologies for the confusion. I'm still the same old Karen but instead of Bryant, I'm now Hannel. Please feel free to email me at
