Dr. Doris Van Kampen-Breit, Professor, University Librarian.
Doris Van Kampen-Breit is a tenured, full professor with 25 years of service at Saint Leo University. She has held a variety of roles in the library and across the University, starting in 2000 as Systems Librarian. She is a leader across the institution and an advocate for the pivotal role of libraries at the state and national levels. She has served as a legislative advocate for ACRL, and on the ICUF Steering Committee, and 11 years on the University Senate; most recently, she served on the University AI Policy Committee. She is directly responsible for the day-to-day operations of the library, including managing and negotiating vendor contracts, overseeing the budget, creating accreditation reports about the library, submitting IPEDS reports, supporting and mentoring library faculty for tenure and promotion, and evaluating employees. She was instrumental in the full transition of the library’s services during COVID, keeping the library building open, one of only two academic libraries in Florida to do so.
Her research interests include supporting students by relationship building and instruction to reduce academic anxiety, cognitive overload, and creating a sense of connectedness, especially to the library. She understands the importance of supporting students where they are with just-in-time instruction and leveraging technology resources, such as AI. Doris holds an Ed.D in C&I from the University of Central Florida, an MBA from Saint Leo University, and an MLIS and BA from the University of South Florida. She is a confident public speaker and facilitator. She has written many articles on a variety of topics, as well as three book chapters, one book, and two scales; the Multidisciplinary Library Anxiety Scale (MLAS), focused on graduate students, (which has been translated into several languages, including Chinese), and is also the author of the Undergraduate Multidisciplinary Library Anxiety Scale (UMLAS). Her most recent publication is the book Managing Crisis in Academic Libraries: Past, Present and Future (ALA Press, 2023).
