Research Presentation Preparation Assignment Due Module 5

Choose an immigration stream to research. You may choose immigrants of any national origins EXCEPT: Chinese, German, Irish, Italian or Jewish because they were already covered extensively in the course.

You will research and deliver a presentation on your chosen immigrant stream. The research presentation (this link opens in a new window) is due in Module 8.

Here are some suggestions of important immigration streams to the U.S. that you may want to research but feel free to choose your own:

  • Greece
  • India
  • El Salvador
  • Guatemala
  • Japan
  • Vietnam
  • Korea
  • Philippines
  • Iraq
  • Pakistan
  • Iran
  • Pacific Islanders
  • Dem. Republic of Congo
  • Burma/Myanmar
  • Ukraine

Once you have selected your research topic, use the HTY110HA Lib Guide (this link opens in a new window) to do some preliminary research on your topic. For this prep assignment, you will need to:

  1. Identify your chosen research topic and explain why you chose it.
  2. Submit two sources you plan to use. Describe each source and explain how you will use each one in your research project due in Module 8.
  3. Find at least one map and one chart or graph that you will use in your presentation. Describe them and explain how you will use each one in your project.
  4. Cite each source and each map using MLA citation system.

This assignment is worth a total of 100 points. Submit your assignment no later than Sunday 11:59 PM EST/EDT in Module 5.

Research Presentation Due Module 8

Your research must include a minimum of 3 reliable sources from the HTY110HA Lib Guide (This link opens in a new window). You may use additional credible sources but these three are the minimum requirement. In Module 5, you submitted preparations for the assignment, be sure to go back and incorporate those preparations (and instructor feedback) into your research presentation.

Your presentation must include the following information:

  • Images/visuals for each slide in the form of:
    • Photos (Required)
    • Maps (Required)
    • Charts
    • Graphs
  • An introduction to your group or topic and an overview of its place of origin.
  • Push and Pull factors that affected your chosen group
  • Skills and assets of this group
  • Liabilities of this group
  • Early settlement patterns of the group
  • Occupations in which this group was concentrated
  • Challenges this group faced
  • Settlement patterns and experiences of this group in American society today
  • Bibliography slide using MLA format for the citations
  • Any other information needed to understand your topic (for example if you discuss Vietnamese immigration and fail to mention the Vietnam War, you may lose points because it suggests you are not an expert on the subject.)

Once you complete your PowerPoint and have outlined your presentation, practice presenting. Use Zoom to record your presentation. Log into Zoom through OKTA, go to Personal meeting room, launch a Zoom session, share your screen so viewers can see your PowerPoint presentation, PRESS RECORD, and present as you move through the slides. Upload the video recording here.

Important

1. Slides must not be covered with paragraphs of writing. Include only short phrases (bullets) and engaging images/visuals. You should explain the content of each slide with your voice using the content of your notes. You should practice several times before the presentation.

2. Do not read from your notes when delivering your presentation. Your words should flow smoothly as though you are speaking to someone rather than reading mechanically from your notes. Try to be animated when you speak rather than speaking in a monotone. Try to engage your listener and keep him or her interested in what you are saying.

3. Use of AI is prohibited for this assignment.

This assignment is worth a total of 100 points. Submit your assignment no later than Sunday 11:59 PM EST/EDT in Module8.
