Required History Courses for the Major in History

This brochure will help give students a better understanding of their professors' background and expertise. It also highlights some of the many opportunities from scholarships to trips enabling students to study abroad.

Required Courses

 

A 36-hour major in history is designed as preparation for graduate study in history, as part of a pre-law program, as a preperartion for careers in business and public affairs, as preperation for library or museum careers, or as a general liberal arts education. 

Major Requirements:

HTY-121 United States History to 1865

HTY-122 United Sates History since 1865

HTY-123 Western Civilizations to 1500

HTY-124 Western Civilizations Since 1500

HTY-301 Career Preperation 

HTY-339 Readings in History

HTY-427 History of Ideas

HTY-499 Senior Seminar

Five other courses in history: three in which must be upper division (300-400 level) and two of which must be in non-Western history. 

Majors are strongly encouraged to take a Spanish language courses. 
Majors must pass a comprehensive oral exam in their senior year.
