Types of LibGuides

Important notes:

Assign subjects and keywords to your guides to facilitate discovery.


Course Guides

Must relate to a specific course. 

Should focus more narrowly on specific topics or course needs/assignments.

Must follow the naming format below:

Examples:

  • All UE course Guides will be labeled “UE: CoursePrefixCourseNumber -  Name of Course - (name of faculty, course semester)“
    •  example: UE: PHI210RS – Thinking and Doing Ethics - (Breit, Fall 2015)
  • All non UE courses will be labeled  “CoursePrefixCourseNumber: (Faculty Name, Semester year)”
    •  example: CRJ123 -  Intro to Law and Legal System - (Breit, Fall 2015)

Subject Guides

Relate to a major, minor, department, or research topic.

Should focus on resources for users in this area of study.

Examples:

  • Business
  • Business Career Information
  • Accounting
  • Communication
  • Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies
  • Indiana History
  • Journalism
  • Sociology

General Purpose Guides

These guides cover research concepts and skills that are relevant to all students.

Examples:

  • Reference & Research Support
  • Using eBooks
  • Writing & Citation help
  • Government Information
  • Library Tutorial
  • Faculty Support  & Resources for Faculty

Internal Guides

Created to provide notes, resources, support not visible to the casual user. (Always make these guides private) Most appropriate for committee work, adjuncts, professional development training etc. Will not be listed on LibGuides main page, even if published.

  • Culture of Teaching and Learning

Naming your Course Guides

Course Code: Title of Course (Professor Last Name, First Name if needed)

Examples:

  • All UE course Guides will be labeled “UE: CoursePrefixCourseNumber -  Name of Course - (name of faculty, course semester)“
    •  example: UE: PHI210RS – Thinking and Doing Ethics - (Breit, Fall 2015)
  • All non UE courses will be labeled  “CoursePrefixCourseNumber: (Faculty Name, Semester year)”
    •  example: CRJ123 -  Intro to Law and Legal System - (Breit, Fall 2015)

Note that there should NOT be a space between the course code and course number.

Exceptions:

  • If you are creating a course guide that will be usesd by multiple faculty, for multiple sections, simply leave off the Professor Last Name part.
    • Example: CRJ123 -  Intro to Law and Legal System (Spring, 2016)
  • If your guide spans multiple semesters in which the course number changes, you may leave off the course number
    • GHS: Global Experiences (Gray)
    • FYS: Field to Fork (Williams)
