International Influences: The Influence of Art and Literature of Italy: This course explores the influence of the classical, medieval, and Renaissance periods on 17th, 18th and 19th century Anglo and American writers embarking on the Grand Tour. Students will critically examine fundamental works of art and architecture, then apply this understanding to analyze the reactions of literary figures to the same. Through study of the dynamic relationship between fine and written arts, students will develop an appreciation for the art, literature, and culture of European communities, as well as the interconnectivity bred by the tradition of the Grand Tour. This interdisciplinary course, which may be taught by an individual or team of instructors, will also consider the historical, geographical, sociopolitical and economical concerns which influenced both the creation and appreciation of the arts of Europe.

Research Assignments

This semester you’ll be working on four research assignments (in addition to your four exams). These assignments will build upon each other, culminating in a final written assignment due the last week of class. We have a built in library day, September 13^th, to kick off your research.
