Lincoln's Attorney General: Edward Bates of Missouri by Marvin R. Cain. Columbia, University of Missouri Press [1965] E415.9.B3 C3

Intro

Attorney General Edward Bates was a stuffy creature whose diary did not reveal a social relationship with the President. His department was the smallest in government and although he was called on for legal opinions, but his opinion seemed lightly valued. (lincoln and Friends.org)
