Pediatric Sunscreen and Sun Safety Guidelines
When surveyed, most pediatricians recognize the importance of counseling families on sun safety, but rarely follow through on anticipatory guidance in this matter due to time constraints.1 Nevertheless, skin cancers have emerged as the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer in the United States.2 In 2011, in the United States alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were approximately 71 000 people diagnosed with melanoma and more than 9000 melanoma-related deaths.2 Furthermore, the lifelong incidence of a patient developing skin cancers has been increasing, and much of the damage done to the skin occurs in a patient’s younger years.
