Mary Richmond and Jane Addams are two of the most influential figures in the history of the social work profession. This paper explores the influence that these women had on the paradigm shift in the profession from moral certainty to rational inquiry. A review of Richmond and Addams's contributions and achievements throws a different light on the historical development of the profession. The impact of their work on ideological tensions that exist within the profession today is also discussed.
